The city center is vehicle free but Salah, our faithful retainer, will meet you at the gates and barrow your bags straight to the house he knows so well, look after you during your stay and drop you back in time for the beginning of your return journey.

Even if you do not intend to buy, or even if you don't like to eat fish, visitors should take a walk down to Essaouira's daily fish market. Watching the traders is a wonder and seeing the fishermen and their boats at work is a definate "must do" on a visit to the city. The harbour at Essaouira is small in comparison to Agadir or Safi, for example, yet the catches of conger eels and sardines in particular are large as a result of the coastal upwelling, caused by the northeastern trade winds, that disturbs the sea floor and stirs up the nutrients and food upon which they thrive.
